Orangevale, California BLS Classes
BLS (Basic Life Support) certification is a requirement for almost everyone in any medical role, including dentists, nurses, and doctors. It is usually obtained through the American Heart Association and is essential for working in clinical and field settings. However, it is not just limited to medical professionals. Basic life-saving CPR and using AEDs are skills everyone should master. Even healthcare providers can forget these essential but critical skills over time, which is why it is crucial to maintain a strong competency in BLS. Everyone should be equipped with these life-saving skills, from medical assistants to heart surgeons.
What is CPR?
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a procedure that can save a person’s life in situations where their breathing/heart rate has stopped, such as during a heart attack or near-drowning incident. CPR can increase the likelihood of survival by providing chest compressions and keeping blood and oxygen flowing to the brain as well as other vital organs until advanced medical care arrives. Remember that taking action is better than doing nothing if you are still determining your knowledge or abilities. The difference between doing nothing and doing something can be significant in a life-and-death situation.
Here is some advice from the American Heart Association:
- If you have never been trained in CPR, perform hands-only CPR by providing continuous chest compressions at 100 to 120 per minute until emergency medical personnel arrive. Do not perform rescue breathing.
- If you have been trained in CPR and feel confident in your abilities, check if the person is breathing and has a pulse. If there is no sign of breathing or a pulse after 10 seconds, begin CPR by performing 30 chest compressions before giving two rescue breaths.
- If you have been trained in CPR but are unsure of your competency, perform chest compressions at 100 to 120 per minute. Please note that this advice only applies to adults, kids, and babies at least four weeks old. Newborns require a different procedure.
- To learn CPR effectively, take a certified CPR training course that teaches how to operate an automated external defibrillator (AED). If you are untrained but need immediate assistance, call 911, and they will provide instructions on CPR.
