Beyond CPR Classes in Sacramento
Sacramento, California BLS Classes
Basic Life Support (BLS) is an essential certification requirement for healthcare providers, including dentists, nurses, and doctors. It is one of the most fundamental legal requirements to work in clinical and field settings, and it is a skill that everyone should master.
However, healthcare providers may need to remember the basic but critical set of skills over time. That’s why everyone, from medical assistants to heart surgeons, should have a strong competency in basic life-saving CPR and AEDs. Having a current American Heart Association certification in BLS is highly recommended.
What is CPR?
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a life-saving procedure used when someone’s breathing or heart rate has stopped, such as during a heart attack or near-drowning incident. CPR can help keep oxygen circulating to the brain and other vital organs until more advanced medical care can be given. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), chest compressions should be performed as the first step. If you’re unsure of your knowledge or abilities, remember that it’s always better to act than to do nothing. Taking action can make the difference between life and death.
The American Heart Association recommends the following CPR procedures based on your level of training:
- If you’ve never had CPR training, perform hands-only CPR with continuous chest compressions of 100 to 120 per minute until emergency medical personnel arrive. Rescue breathing is not necessary.
- If you’re trained and confident in your abilities, assess the person’s breathing and pulse. If there is no breathing or pulse after 10 seconds, begin CPR with 30 chest compressions before giving two rescue breaths.
- If you’ve had CPR training previously but are unsure of your abilities, perform chest compressions at a rate of 100 to 120 per minute. It’s important to note that these procedures apply only to adults, children, and babies at least four weeks old. Newborns require a different approach.
- To learn CPR efficiently, consider taking a certified CPR training course that includes instructions on operating an automated external defibrillator (AED). If you’re untrained and need immediate assistance, call 911 and follow their instructions on how to perform CPR.
