Elk Grove, California BLS Classes

Almost everyone working in a medical role must have the Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. BLS with an American Heart Association certification is essential for dentists, nurses, and physicians. Although it is one of the crucial certification requirements for working in clinical and field settings, it is also a skill everyone should possess.

Over time, it’s common for healthcare providers to forget the fundamental and vital set of skills. Everyone should be highly skilled in performing basic life-saving CPR and using an AED, from medical assistants, to nurses, to heart surgeons.

What is CPR?

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a life-saving system that can help save lives when a person’s breathing or heart rate has stopped due to a heart attack, near drowning, or other emergencies. CPR can help save a life by providing vital oxygen to the brain and essential organs until medical assistance arrives. The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends administering chest compressions first in an emergency. If you’re unsure of your knowledge and skills, remember that it’s always better to take action over doing nothing – the choice between doing something and nothing could mean the difference between life and death.

Here is some advice from the AHA (American Heart Association):

  • If you’ve never had CPR training, use your hands only for CPR in an emergency. Give 100 to 120 chest compressions on a continuous basis until emergency medical services arrive (described in more detail below). No rescue breathing is necessary.
  • Trained and ready. If you are already confident in your knowledge and skills, check to see if the person is breathing and has a pulse. If no pulse or breathing is detected after 10 seconds, begin administering chest compressions. Start CPR by performing 30 chest compressions at a rate of 100-120 compressions per minute, followed by two rescue breaths.
  • Trained years ago – If you have previously been trained in CPR but are not confident in your skills, it’s important to remember the basics: chest compressions should be applied at a rate of 100 to 120 per minute

This recommendation only applies to adults, children, and infants at least four weeks old. Babies four weeks and younger should follow a distinct process.

  • Learn CPR quickly and efficiently with a certified CPR training course covering how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED) properly. If you are in a life-threatening situation and don’t have the skills to provide CPR, then dial 911 immediately, and they will guide you through the steps.
As a doula, nanny, and early childhood educator, I highly recommend Josh Sauberman and CPReducation for pediatric & adult certification. Josh is knowledgeable, flexible, and personable. He has children of his own, and I can tell he’s really invested in making sure the education is thorough and effective. I’ve re-certified my First Aid/CPR with him twice now, and I won’t go to anyone else as long as I live in the area!
